“The Rabbi Feeding Israel's Most Vulnerable”

Chosen for turning Jewish compassion into action: Rabbi Sholom Duchman has spent decades leading Colel Chabad, one of Israel's oldest charitable organizations, providing food, financial assistance and dignity to Israelis in need.

Reservists are not only serving in the army of Israel — they are serving in the army of the entire Jewish people.

Rabbi Sholom Duchman, 2025

In the aftermath of October 7 and throughout Israel's prolonged wartime mobilization, Duchman and Colel Chabad have expanded support for vulnerable families, including families of IDF reservists struggling financially while their loved ones serve. Colel Chabad operates soup kitchens and food programs across Israel, feeding thousands of elderly and vulnerable Israelis every day.

But Duchman's mission is bigger than food. It is about making sure that no Israeli, especially during a national crisis, feels forgotten. His work embodies one of the oldest Jewish values: when your fellow Jew is hurting, you show up.

And Duchman has spent his life showing up.

That is why Rabbi Sholom Duchman is No. 35 on The 36.
